Ice Fish Research: Something fishy…

A message from Ice Fish Research

We are excited to present the new online platform Ice Fish Research (@icefishresearch) to all of you. Our goal is to share all fish research done in Iceland in a fun and easy way. Who are we? We are four doctoral students at Háskóli Íslands who all work with different types of fish. Theresa works with flounder (flundra), Michelle with Cod (þorskur), Lieke with Arctic charr (bleikja), and Alessandra with Stickleback (hornsíli). Our story started with a workshop on how to share science, organized by the Icelandic Ecological Society (Vistís) this past April. Special thanks go to Filipa Samarra (Icelandic Orca Project) and Edda Elisabet Magnúsdóttir (Icelandic Winter Whales) for organizing this event and to Anaïs Remili (Whale scientists) for showing us how one can get started and how much fun science communication can be. The amazing work of these women inspired each of us so much that we all wanted to get involved and give back to the community that welcomed us with open arms. We knew that we were stronger as a team, so we set out on this journey together, hoping to make science fun and open for everybody! We hope to motivate people in Iceland to connect through fish science. Especially in a small community like Iceland, it is important to work together so we can all help each other and make the best of our resources. We hope to inspire people to connect and care for the beautiful nature we have here in the country. We also want to highlight researchers who are just getting started and motivate them to share their work with everybody. But, not only do we want to show results from researchers, we also want to show what the everyday work of a scientist looks like. For example, where and how do we get our information? And how do we treat the animals and the space they live in? Finally, we want to make the people and the job of a researcher more approachable. We wish to show all the different kinds of people in research and hopefully inspire young people to be curious and ask questions.

Especially in a small community like Iceland, it is important to work together so we can all help each other and make the best of our resources. So we were very excited when BIODICE agreed to sponsor and collaborate with us. Together we hope to reach even more people and inspire them to connect and care for the beautiful nature we have here in the country.
